Can e-learning become a true replacement of schools in future?

Question

e-Learning is thriving and I see that myself. from Toppr in India to Kineo in US, this industry has already grown to a $100 billion business.

But I can still see, e-learning is not a substitute of traditional learning. Not everyone is capable enough to learn online. Can e-learning replace traditional schools and universities in future?

  1. Prologue

Back in 1990, there came a technology which later affected somehow every single human’s life on this earth (even of the people from Amazon). Tim Berners-Lee, with help from Robert Cailliau, was able to connect hypertext with the internet.

The world was set to connect with the black screen and some text hard-coded into a document. Well, the story didn’t go well for many players of that time. Travel agents, Cable television and encyclopedia just went out of business by the disruption created by the internet.

What is happening in e-Learning today?

Same is happening today in academia. Everything is changing from the way students interact with the teacher in the classroom to the way a student perceives information.

Education is no more about gathering information in the classroom. In fact, way more information is easily accessible through the Internet today than in the school. Now is the time education is going through a crucial phase of transformation. Classrooms will not remain a place to gather facts anymore. Classrooms will be more like practical classes. Where you will use the information and learn (educate in the real sense) from the points you have learned.

Can e-Learning replace schools in the future?

It has already done! Not every study needs big school bag and a bunch of books. Consider learning programming, designing, and other similar things which you can quickly learn from anywhere. Sooner or later, e-Learning will become the only medium to master.

But primary education, core education and lab education will never be entirely replaced by e-Learning. But e-learning will play a significant role in such education. As said earlier, education in a classroom will be more like a practical lab and less like a teacher-student conversation in the future.

Also, the human factor will always be there. In the future, the moral support, imagination, love and empathy will be something a child must be looking for. Schools with such value will be the only schools (I believe).
